Fall is in the air, and the Nutmegs and I are already planning fun Halloween and harvest-time projects. While poring over cookbooks, I learned that the Nutmegs had never eaten caramel apples (what?!), so I knew that was our first order of business.

We decided to set up a little demo kitchen rather than cooking in the mouse house, because Papa was adamant that the kitchen needed more cleaning before he could bear to have it photographed. (He’s quite particular for someone who used to live in the middle of the woods…)

First things first: measuring out the butter and brown sugar for the caramel sauce.

Papa watched over Mira as she melted the two together in a sauce pot.

Once the sugar and butter were thoroughly melted and combined, it was time to add a bit of heavy cream. At this stage Papa took over (that caramel gets hot!), keeping watch as the mixture turned rich and caramel-y. Yum!

And then, it was time for the fun part: dipping apples! Mama and Mira had collected organic apples over the weekend, and Mira inserted little twigs into each one (Martha Stewart would approve of this rustic touch). The whole family took turns dipping.

Lesson learned: caramel + white fur do not mix. We had to take a photo break while everyone cleaned up.
