The Valentine madness continues with more love-themed sweets for American Girl and other 18″ dolls. The pieces below are for a custom order, but if you’d like some of your own, just get in touch here.
First off, I created a cardboard cake form packed full of aluminum foil, which was wrapped in white polymer clay. The interior section was covered in a red velvet clay with a pink heart cutout in the center.
Next, I had to create a crumb texture all over the colored surface, and this part of the process took forever. My hands are in need of a serious break now!
The cake was then covered in smooth white clay to mimic fondant, and pink and red decorations were added. The pink candies on top were made using this heart mold.
I followed the same process to create a matching cake slice.
The candy cottage was made using a similar method, and you can learn how to make your own by downloading this free, step-by-step tutorial.
I created a variety of iced cookies for the door, windows and mailbox; candy butterflies; lovebirds; and red hots embedded in frosting. The roof was lined with polymer clay candy wafers coated in iridescent glitter (I like Martha Stewart’s glitter sets), and the conversation hearts were sealed with both acrylic spray and brush-on varnish for added durability.
Here’s the finished cottage.

How cute! My hands hurt just thinking about all that texturizing — oof!! It looks beautiful though!

Thanks! It was quite the thumb workout, that’s for sure. 🙂
