I was in a serious crafting mood over the weekend, so on Sunday I spent the morning wandering around Michaels, soaking up inspiration (heaven!). They were running a sale on all things Christmas, and I found an aisle full of fronds in various shapes and sizes, all covered in glitter and available in a rainbow of colors. Yes, please!
Initially, I was brainstorming ways to create a flower arrangement with the fronds, but that would require foam to stick them in, a pot or container of some kind–bleh. I just wasn’t feeling that idea. But then it occurred to me that I could bend them around a wreath frame and make the glitteriest rainbow wreath in the universe. Sold.
Michaels has a lot of choices when it comes to wreath bases, everything from foam bases for floral arrangements to grapevine wreaths, but I also found one that was a simple ring of plywood with holes for hanging. I bought one of those, a spool of white satin ribbon, and an assortment of the rainbow fronds.
How to make the wreath
To make the wreath, I glued one end of the ribbon to the back of the wooden wreath, and then I wrapped the entire spool around the wreath to cover the wood completely, hot glueing the other end once I ran out of ribbon. I then spent some time figuring out the arrangement of the fronds, and I used wire cutters to clip off the plastic stems since I didn’t need them.
From there, it was just a matter of hot glueing the fronds in place, and once all of them were attached I stepped back to see if there were any conspicuous gaps. Most of these could be covered simply by arranging a leaf here or a stem there and gluing it down, but I also took a couple of globe Christmas ornaments and glued those over a patch on the bottom.
The wreath is hanging with a simple nail for now, but a pretty ribbon would also look nice. I’ve already decided that this wreath is going to stay up all year, and I want to do a few more in various sizes, each with different rainbow items. My husband also suggested turning the wreath into a mirror, and I really like the idea. I’ll have to check the craft store for round mirrors, and if I can find one in the right size, I’ll glue the wreath to the mirror like a frame.

What a fun project! My family made glitter ornaments last year and I’m not sure I could talk them into doing glitter projects two years in a row, but this might be worth a try.

Oooh, glitter ornaments. You had me at glitter. 😉 This wreath was a little less “glitter everywhere” since the foliage came pre-glittered, if that’ll help convince anyone!
