I’ve just finished a custom order for a pretty dollhouse cake topped with a very pale green fondant, encircled with forest green ribbon, and decorated with glittery fondant flowers.
I used the fondant cake method outlined in How to Sculpt Miniature Bakery Treats from Polymer Clay to make the smooth cake base. Then, I wrapped a thin strip of darker green clay around the base.
For the flowers, I rolled out a thin sheet of white clay with roughly an equal amount of translucent clay mixed in, and I cut out tiny flowers using a paper template I drew by hand.
Using a ball-end tool, I made a little depression in the center of each flower, and then I etched thin lines radiating outward with a needle tool. Finally, each flower received a dusting of artist chalk pastel in the appropriate color.
To secure the flowers, I attached them to the unbaked cake with a dab of liquid clay before baking the entire piece. For a shimmery touch, each flower was brushed with a bit of glue and dusted with iridescent glitter. Voilà! A tiny cake fit for a fancy mouse.
Here’s the original inspiration:
