Wondering how to make polymer clay ice cream cones for your dollhouse and food jewelry projects? Here’s how.
You’ll need a pale tan polymer clay color, a needle tool, paint brush, chalk pastels, and an ice cream cone mold. I sell three styles of molds: a 1/6 scale sugar cone mold (get the ice cream scoop mold here), a 1/12 scale sugar cone mold (this is a two-part mold that includes the scoop), and a cake cone mold.
(You can also find more detailed instructions for using the cake cone mold, as well as instructions for piping soft-serve ice cream made of clay, in Dollhouse Miniature Carnival Foods.)
How to Make Polymer Clay Ice Cream Cones
Ice cream cone molds make two-dimensional cones, i.e. one half of a cone, so you need to fit the two halves together to form the complete cone.
- To do so, press the two cone halves together gently with your fingers, taking care not to smush the cone pattern.
- Using a needle tool, smooth one of the seams together, gently smearing the clay of one cone half to meet the clay of the other half, closing the gap.
- Do the same with the second seam on the other side of the cone. You might need to gently pinch the seam together with your fingers first, because smoothing the seam on the opposite side often causes this seam to gap out more.
- Once both seams are closed, use a dry paint brush to dust the cones with grated chalk pastel pigment.
